Why use this beat finder

What is a beat finder?

A beat finder is a tool that listens to a recording and works out its tempo in beats per minute (BPM) and where each beat falls. DJs, producers, dancers and video editors use a beat finder to match tracks, set a DAW tempo or cut on the beat.

Private by design

This beat finder runs entirely in your browser. Your track is analysed on your device; no audio is sent to our servers.

Honest about the result

Every reading comes with half-time and double-time values, because any beat finder can count a groove at half or double speed.

Not a beat marketplace

This beat finder measures beats in audio you already have. If you need a new beat, the AI music generator can create an original instrumental at the BPM you choose.

How the beat finder works

No guesswork and no server: here is what the beat finder does with your file.

Beat finder marking the hits and a beat grid along a glowing waveform
  1. 1. Decode in the browser

The beat finder opens your track right in the browser.

  2. 2. Hear the hits

It listens for the kicks, snares and other hits that drive the groove.

  3. 3. Lock onto the beat

It finds the steady pulse between 40 and 208 BPM and marks exactly where each beat lands.

  4. 4. Key, danceability and loudness

It works out the key and scale, how danceable the groove feels and how loud the track is overall, and checks each 20-second section for tempo changes.

Beat finder features

BPM to one decimal

The beat finder reports whole BPM when the tempo is on the grid and one decimal when it is not.

Half and double time

See 2 alternatives so the number matches how you count the groove.

Beat grid + click track

Hear a click on every detected beat to verify the beat finder by ear.

Tempo-change check

BPM for each 20-second section shows whether the track speeds up or slows down.

Nothing uploaded

Audio stays on your device — safe for unreleased demos.

Key & scale

See the key (for example A minor) so you can mix harmonically or match a sample.

Tips for an accurate BPM

  • Use a section with drums: a clear kick and snare give the beat finder the strongest pulse.
  • Slow intros, breakdowns and rubato passages are harder to read; try a full chorus or verse.
  • If the number feels twice too fast or slow, use the half-time or double-time value.
  • Hip-hop usually sits around 85–100 BPM, house around 120–128 and drum and bass around 170–175 — a quick sanity check.
  • Press Play and listen: if the clicks drift away from the drums, tap along to confirm.
  • Live recordings without a click can drift; read the per-section BPM list.
