Why use this vocal range test
Real-time pitch tracking
The vocal range test runs the aubio pitch library (compiled to WebAssembly) on your voice about 25 times a second and shows the note, frequency, cents and aubio’s confidence live.
Only notes you can hold
Short cracks, breaths and slides are ignored. The vocal range test keeps a note only when the same semitone is sustained, so your result reflects usable notes.
Private by design
Nothing is recorded or uploaded. The vocal range test reads your microphone with the Web Audio API and analyses it on your device.
Free and unlimited
No account and no limits. Take the vocal range test as often as you like to track how your range develops.

How the vocal range test works
A simple pipeline turns your voice into a range and a voice-type estimate, all on your device.

1. Listen
Your microphone signal goes into a Web Audio analyser with echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain switched off, so the pitch is not altered.
2. Detect pitch
Every 40 ms the vocal range test passes a 2048-sample frame to aubio (default method yinfast, a fast YIN by de Cheveigné & Kawahara, 2002). aubio returns a frequency and a confidence; readings below the confidence threshold or outside about 60–1600 Hz are dropped, and the rest are converted to the nearest note with A4 = 440 Hz.
3. Keep sustained notes
A note is counted only after the same semitone has been held for about 0.3 seconds. Silence and unclear frames are skipped.
4. Measure the span
Your lowest and highest sustained notes give the range in semitones and octaves (12 semitones = 1 octave).
5. Compare with voice types
The vocal range test compares your range with typical operatic ranges for bass, baritone, tenor, contralto, mezzo-soprano and soprano and shows the closest match and the runner-up.

Tips for an accurate vocal range test
- Warm up first: gentle humming and lip trills for a few minutes usually add a few notes at both ends.
- Use your normal singing voice. Vocal fry at the bottom and whistle notes at the top are usually not counted in a singer’s range.
- Hold each note steadily for at least half a second — the vocal range test ignores quick slides.
- Use headphones or a quiet room so background music or noise is not detected as your voice.
- Never strain. Stop at the highest and lowest notes you can sing comfortably and repeat the vocal range test on another day.
- Treat the voice type as a starting point: teachers also look at tessitura and timbre, not just range.

Typical vocal ranges by voice type
Approximate operatic ranges the vocal range test compares you with (Wikipedia, “Vocal range”). Real voices often extend beyond them.
| Voice type | Typical range | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Soprano | C4 – G6 | ≈ 262 – 1568 Hz |
| Mezzo-soprano | A3 – G5 | ≈ 220 – 784 Hz |
| Contralto | F3 – C5 | ≈ 175 – 523 Hz |
| Tenor | D3 – A4 | ≈ 147 – 440 Hz |
| Baritone | B2 – F4 | ≈ 123 – 349 Hz |
| Bass | G2 – C4 | ≈ 98 – 262 Hz |
